award-winning documentary filmmaker Ron Frank, and to be aired
on PBS and the History Channel.
Synopsis
During
the first half-hour of the program, viewers will be given a
glimpse of Appalachian culture through the eyes of Joe Isaacs,
a bluegrass musician born in 1947 in the backwoods of
Kentucky. A
first-hand account of the important role that music plays in
the mountain culture is unfolded as the story of Joe's
upbringing and life-long career in bluegrass music is revealed
through interviews with him and his brothers and sisters
on-site in their original mountain homes, where mountain ways
are still kept alive. Additionally,
the moving photography of Appalachian-chronicler Warren
Brunner--who documented Joe Isaacs' family for forty
years--will be used to further enhance the story.
The
second half-hour of the program focuses on the The Isaacs, the
bluegrass gospel family group that Joe Isaacs co-founded with
his wife Lily. No words can describe this talented, personable
and photogenic family and their amazing music.
Camera crews capture them on the road, aboard their bus,
getting ready for concerts, backstage and live before
audiences. The
final ten minutes of the program focuses on daughter Sonya
Isaacs who travels with the family when she is not involved
with her own career in country music. Country stars Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner and
Brad Paisley will give us glimpses into the personality of
this unique, beautiful and talented young woman as well.
The final sequence presents singing sensation Levi
Bowman, Joe's 6-year old grandson who travels with the family, bringing to the present time the story of a
transmission of music from one generation to another in true
Southern tradition.
