The Tabla


Sharda Sahai

The set of drums known as the tabla is used for kheyal and other non-dhrupad styles of North Indian classical and light classical vocal and instrumental music.

Amir Hussain Khan Tabla solo in tintal.

Kishan Maharaj Great master of the Benares Gharana. This tabla solo in tintal was recorded in Benares on April 21, 1971 by Robert S. Gottlieb. From Robert S. Gottlieb's publication Solo Tabla Drumming of North India.

Chatur Lal - Panchan Swari. There are different ways to play this 15-beat tala, depending upon how it is sub-sectioned. Here, it is 2 - 4 - 4 - 2 - 1 1/2 - 1 1/2. Recorded in 1962 before this young musician's untimely death. 

Habbibuddin - Tintal Habibuddin (1899 - 1974?) was a tabla master from the Ajrara Gharana. This recording includes two qaidas recorded by Jnan Prakash Gosh in 1957 and two quidas and a rela from a tape belonging to Sangi Natak Akademi recorded in 1956. From Robert S. Gottlieb's publication Solo Tabla Drumming of North India.

Ustad Inam Ali Khan This master from the Dehli Gharana was born in 1924 and died in 1990. This tintal solo was recorded in Bombay on October 6, 1971 by Robert S. Gottlieb. From Robert S. Gottlieb's publication Solo Tabla Drumming of North India

Kermatuullah Khan A master of the Farukabad Gharana, he was born in 1918 and died in 1977. This solo in tintal was recorded May 10, 1971 in Calcutta  by Robert S. Gottlieb. From Robert S. Gottlieb's publication Solo Tabla Drumming of North India

Lateef Ammed Khan A master of the Dehli Gharana. Recorded in Amsterdam on December 4, 1985. Tbla solo is in tintal.

Ustad Wajid Hussain Master of the Lucknow Gharana, he was born in 1906 and died in 1978.  This solo in tintal was recorded April 20, 1971 in Lucknow  by Robert S. Gottlieb. From Robert S. Gottlieb's publication Solo Tabla Drumming of North India

 

The Pakhawaj


Raja Chatrapati Singh

The Pakhawaj is used in the style of classical music known as Dhrupad.

Raja Chatrapati Singh Pakhawaj solo in Dhamar Tal. Recorded in the early 1960s and released on the Barenreiter-Musicaphon Label.

Raja Chatrapati Singh Pakhawaj solo in Chautal. Recorded in 1987 in Munich. From the out-of-print recording Masters of Tala by Raja Chatrapati Singh. Wergo SM 1075-50.
