How Can I Tell the Difference Between Positive and Negative Music?
by Don Robertson

Positive Music

Listen carefully to contemporary music. Does the music use ‘ugly’ sounds? Are the guitars channeled through electronic devices to purposely distort their sound? Are the rhythms grating, sexually stimulating? Listen to a really beautiful and peaceful composition of classical music such as Debussy’s Claire de Lune or Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. Relax as you listen and let yourself fully enjoy the music. Now, after about 10 or 15 minutes, quickly switch your CD player to a CD that you are wondering about. How does it sound now that you are in a peaceful and calm mood? Does this CD feel good, or is it jarring, irritating, and hard-edged?
