DoveSong.com Projects
An Acoustic Theater
The
team at DoveSong.com has a vision of building a dome theater in the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just outside of Denver, Colorado.
This theater would be used only for the performance of
selected compositions of great acoustic sacred classical
music.
Situated
in the foothills, among the pines and the granite rock
formations, this dome theater would attract people from around
the world. They would come to hear great sacred music
performed as it should be, in reverence and silence, with no
applause, no announcements, no beverages...and no hotdogs. There
would also be no electronic amplification, and lighting
would be subtle. The theater would accommodate choirs, a full
symphony orchestra, soloists and ensembles.
The
primary focus would be the performance of sacred music for orchestra and choir,
with an emphasis on sacred music, but the theater would also host
other great classical sacred music traditions as well.
The
theater
would be a place where listeners would receive a healing
and uplifting experience.
A
selected reparatory of uplifting music would be performed in
the theater, with music for choir with or without orchestral
accompaniment as the specialty: the masses of Schubert,
Beethoven and Bruckner, the choral music of Palestrina,
Josquin, and Victoria, the requiems of Duruflé and Brahms. It
would also encourage contemporary postive music composers to write inspired
works for this setting.
The
focus would be on the unique effect that concordant sacred music
produces and how a spiritual impression allows an audience to
be transformed.
Upbeat music that would cause attention to
the physical, such as
upbeat gospel music, although greatly respected, would not be
played here -- the reason being that the beat causes patterns of
energy to be broken up. This can be a positive occurrence in
other other environments, but in this theatre, a permanent sacred space would be created
with a strong vibration that would be felt by aware people
who entered, much as one can feel the omnipresent energy in
the great cathedrals of Europe.
DoveSong.com is interested in working with
organizations and parties who would like to participate in this project. It must be understood that a project
such as this is not impossible to build and support. There is
much skepticism today about classical music projects, much talk
about low arts funding and so forth. But what we are talking
about here has not been done before, and there will be
serious interest. Wagner built his own theater for the
performance of his works in Bayreuth, Germany, and certainly
he had many doubters and detractors. But it thrives today, and
the waiting period for purchasing tickets is around eight
years.
