A Positive Arts Television Channel

DoveSong.com is seeking to work with other organizations to create a full-time television channel dedicated to the positive arts.

Background

The Positive Arts Channel would fulfill a strong need for a cable/satellite channel dedicated to the great artistic achievements of man, art that inspires, uplifts, and provides a healing quality, nourishing the soul.

This would be the very first television channel of its kind, an a tremendous breakthrough in the use of technology. Because of the commercial nature of television, most programming is geared to a level that the average person expects. Public television has helped fill the void left by commercial television by providing more educational content, but there has not been a channel created to specifically address the need for the kind of content that we are proposing.

We can ask ourselves how we expect to perpetuate the best that the world's greatest cultures have to offer if we don't place it into a prominent position in our society? We have invented a great technology called television and placed it into almost every home and that is a tremendous feat, but where, do we ask, do we place our finest cultural heritage using this wonderful technology? What television channel do we turn to learn about poetry, or to watch the dramas of Moliere, Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller, and the great Greek tragedies? How will our children learn about the lives of the great poets and writers? How will they now about the structure of a symphony, or actually see a string quartet? How can we expect to educate them when the finest art of our culture is not available to them? How can we expect our children to learn about other cultures if they are never exposed to them? Public broadcasting and similar cable and satellite channels such as the Trio Arts Channel, Discovery, and Biography has done a great job in partly fulfilled this need, but has not gone all the way.

Types of Programming

  • Music-Visual Productions. Three-minute video productions or longer programs as described in Visual Productions. The shorter videos could be used as filler, or as content for longer shows. Both of these types of visual productions are currently being produced and are available. It would be good to program two or three of the longer shows per day as the Positive Arts Channel would be widely implemented in hospitals and convalescent centers and such presentations would have a healing quality.

  • Biographies. Programs about great artists, musicians, philosophers, mathematicians, architects, spiritual leaders, authors of plays, poets, literary figures, designers.

  • Shows produced by children. Television programs with the prospective of children.

  • Historical Arts Programming. Programs about Art. There is so much great art in the world, and so little information on television about it. Native American art, Chinese, Art of India, Persia, European.

  • Positive Music Concerts. Televised performances of great musical performances

  • Theatrical Performances. The great masterpieces of the theater are rarely ever televised.

Television programming has focused a lot of energy in portraying negative images and using negative music. Not much thought or energy has been put into providing uplifting content. The Positive Arts Channel will not be a religious channel, nor programming dedicated to any particular philosophy other than the existence of content that uplifts and inspires. The point will not be to convert people to anything any more than TV shows with lots of violence are created to convert people to violence.

DoveSong.com takes the stand that it is now time for a Television Channel that is dedicated to the Positive Arts to be funded and available on both satellite and cable channels throughout the world.
